Bayern Munich picked up three vital points in the Champions League as they overcame a resolute Benfica side 1-0 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

Kompany's men were badly in need of a win after taking just three points from their opening three European games this season, and they got what they wanted, but had to fight hard for it.

After a delayed kick-off due to problems with the Munich subway system, which meant that many supporters struggled to get to the stadium in time, the match finally kicked off 15 minutes late.

Despite controlling most of the possession, Bayern struggled to make the breakthrough against a resilient and well-organized Benfica side in the first half.

Bayern came close in the 38th minute when Serge Gnabry's half-volley was well saved by Anatoliy Trubin, but there weren't many clear-cut chances for Kompany's men before the break.

It was much the same at the start of the second half, but Bayern remained patient and finally broke the deadlock when Harry Kane headed the ball across goal for Jamal Musiala to nod into the net on 68 minutes.

It was closer to 2-0 than it was to 1-1, but the scoreline remained the same as Bayern held on for a one-goal victory.

The win gave Bayern a much-needed boost in the Champions League, where they now sit 17th with six points.
