Paul Robinson has tipped Matt Doherty to shine next season if Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is appointed Tottenham manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said he would be “very surprised” if Doherty leaves this summer, even if the club are successful in their pursuit of Norwich City’s Max Aarons.

Doherty has started just five games in 2021, with Serge Aurier the first choice right-back for the majority of the season.

The Sun claim the defender’s former manager Nuno Espirito Santo could be in line to take the vacant managerial position at Spurs after contact from super agent Jorge Mendes.

Robinson is adamant the Portuguese manager could bring out the best in Doherty.

“I would be very surprised if Doherty left because I think he did well at the start of the season,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He definitely plays better in a five rather than a four though. He has struggled in the second half of the season but I would be very surprised to see him leave a year after he arrived.

“We will have to wait and see who the new manager is because it will be the new manager, not Daniel Levy, who will make that sort of call.

“There is talk of Nuno Espirito Santo coming in and if he was to be the next manager Doherty’s future would be a very bright one. Nuno knows how to get the best out of him.”
