Bolton Wanderers striker Jón Daði Böðvarsson has remained at the Trotters following a busy transfer window, but he could be limited for minutes on the pitch for the rest of the season.

Under Ian Evatt's stewardship, the Trotters have impressed this season in League One as they attempt to return to the Championship, and currently sit third in the table, with games in hand over second and first place.

Their impressive performances have been helped by goals from strikers Dion Charles and Victor Adeboyejo, although the lack of minutes for Böðvarsson will come as a disappointment for many fans as he is well liked on the terraces.

The 31-year-old Iceland international striker has struggled for game-time this season, regularly coming off the bench for late second half minutes instead of starting, and perhaps that is where he is most effective from for anything other than finding the back of the net..

Böðvarsson faces tough competition for a place in the Bolton side

FLW's Bolton pundit Oliver Jaques is glad that Böðvarsson remained at the club in January despite the fact that Wanderers now have five strikers to choose from for two starting spots.

"It's a difficult one with Böðvarsson," Oliver told Football League World.

"He's a bit of a fan favourite, and I'm quite a fan of his.

"I think he's better off the bench and I don't think we should have moved him on in January, he's good to have around.

"The issue we now have it, with Collins coming in and not offloading any forwards, we've got quite a stack of forwards now, and he doesn't seem to be using him at all now that Collins has come in. "Obviously, Collins has come in off the bench, and he likes (Cameron) Jerome off the bench, who I think does a good job for us and offers us something slightly different if we're chasing a result, or even better - holding on to one. "It's a shame really as I think one of those five or six is going to suffer between now and the end of the season.

"I did see something quite interesting earlier today, where an older article on the Bolton News highlighted when he first signed his one-year deal last season, that there's an extra year extension if he makes a certain amount of appearances this season.

"That may be coming into Evatt's thinking, given the fact that we now have lots of options in that area, he might be thinking do we really want to keep him for another year?

"Personally though, I'd have kept him on for the rest of the season, and hopefully he gets some good minutes.

"Hopefully he's a good option off the bench for us."

Bolton could move on Böðvarsson after his contract expires

The forward signed a one-year deal with the Trotters in the summer, keeping him with the club until the end of the 2023-24 season at the very least.

There are aforementioned claims though that it included an extension after he played a certain number of games, which would make sense given the uncertainty surrounding his injury worries following last year's issue with fitness.

However, it doesn't look like that is the reason for his lack of minutes.

While he has only played 632 minutes in the current campaign, he has played in nearly every game in LEague One from the bench, starting four times and coming on in 18 different matches.

Böðvarsson's lack of consistent minutes is likely down to his performances.

These are not the stats of a striker that Evatt can rely on for promotion, especially with the great form that Charles and Adeboyejo have been in comparatively.

With the signing of Aaron Collins in January, it may be a surprise that the Icelandic striker wasn't moved on - he didn't feature in Wanderers' last league match, which was the first fixture in League One he has missed out on since October.

However, the manager may simply be taking precautions in keeping him in case of injuries to his other forwards, or there simply may have been no interest in the experienced striker in January due to the fact his contract may be ending in the summer.
