Former Millwall manager Neil Harris is back in work with League One side Cambridge United just two months after his exit from the Den.

The 47-year-old departed the Lions by resigning from his position but is already back in management after just a short break.

Cambridge United are bottom of the third division table, so will be hoping he can turn things around and keep the team at that level.

However, he has taken a big step down the English football pyramid to take on the role, returning to the club he previously managed before taking on the Millwall job last year.

When asked about his move back to Cambridge United, FLW’s Millwall fan pundit Lucas Bell claimed that he’s not at all surprised by this decision.

He believes that Harris has an affinity with the club from his time there as manager before, and that it’s a step that makes sense for him after leaving the Lions in December.

“It’s a little bit of a surprise, but nothing too much,” Bell told Football League World.

“Harris has an affinity with Cambridge, I think he really enjoyed his time there as a manager, he signed for us from Cambridge City back in the day, so.

“He’s got his limitations, didn’t particularly enjoy working under the new model with us, so we’ll see how much [he succeeds], whether that’s more of a joint effort, and he works a bit better with Mark Bonner as the director of football.

“But obviously taking it all back, going to another club, trying to regalvanise it, re-energise it — something Harris is very good at — he’ll get that connection back hopefully that maybe’s been missing for them.

“Is he a better manager than working at the bottom of League One? Certainly, but he’ll want to go back there and do justice to the job that he feels he was doing last season until we came for him.

“It’s fair enough I think, it’s a move that makes sense.

“Yes, he is a better manager but I’m not too shocked he’s ended up going back there.”

Millwall are still in contention for a play-off place in the Championship, albeit they are currently an outsider among the many clubs currently in the mix.

Timing of Neil Harris's return is a surprise

Harris only waiting a couple of months to come back to football management is more of a surprise than him going to Cambridge United.

He clearly has a strong relationship with the club from his previous stint working there, so a return is a nice next step for him in his career.

The manner of his exit from Millwall was very sudden, which indicated he might want a longer break from the game.
