Diving into the history of Brazilian football

Diving into football history

The Museu do Futebol is located underneath the iconic stands of the Pacaembu-Stadions – one of the oldest stadiums in Brazil.

Old, narrow passageways lead you past the standing section once used by fans of the São Paulo's four biggest clubs: Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo and Santos.

The museum doesn't just share the sporting history of Brazil, but also shows how deeply football is intertwined with Brazilian culture. Through the use of compelling videos and images, visitors get to learn that here, football isn't just a game – it's a way of life.

"Being able to see the magic moments in the history of Brazilian football live was extremely cool," said Nicolas Seiwald. "Brazil is known for having passionate football fans. This passion is infectious – it really gets you in the mood to play!"

Up close with a historic venue

The highlight of our visit? Obviously nothing could surpass getting to step out onto the pitch of the old stadium (even though the pitch is now made of artificial turf!). Gazing around the stands rising up around the pitch still makes for an impressive sight.

The visit was particularly special for Lukas Klostermann. It brought back memories of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, where the defender won a silver medal with Germany.

"I looked around to see whether they would have any photos from the final back then hanging up here," he said with a grin. "Brazil have such a long and successful history as a footballing nation – it's extremely impressive to get to experience it all in person."

There's one memory in particular that still generates goosebumps for Klostermann:

"The final at the Maracaña was the best game I've ever been a part of. Even though we were Brazil's opponents that day, you could really feel how much this sport means to the people here. Their passion still gives me goosebumps today."
