“Discussion is ongoing” – Fabrizio Romano provides update as Chelsea close in on another signing | OneFootball

Chelsea remain very interested in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Dario Essugo according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues completed a shock move for 17-year-old Sporting winger Geovany Quenda on Friday in a deal worth around £40m.

Having not been active in January Chelsea have now completed two deals, with Brazilian Denner also set to join the club in 2026.

Chelsea are facing a critical summer window with a number of key areas needing to be addressed within the squad, including a striker and centre back.

The Blues have been linked with the likes of Liam Delap and Benjamin Sesko, whilst they are also said to be keen on bringing Marc Guehi back to Stamford Bridge.

However, it appears Chelsea could also be targeting another midfielder and Romano has provided an update on their pursuit of Essugo.

“Chelsea remains very interested in Dário Essugo!” he told his Youtube channel.

“They are still tracking him and have had plenty of chats on the club and player side. No deal is done, but discussion is ongoing over a potential package and fee.”

Essugo is currently on loan at La Liga outfit Las Palmas from Sporting, and the Blues were linked with a move for the 20-year-old last summer.

The midfielder has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring once, but quite what Chelsea’s plan would be remains to be seen.

The Blues have Andrey Santos returning from Strasbourg, and it’s believed he will have a key role to play, whilst they also have Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Quite where Essugo would fit in isn’t clear, but with Lavia’s fitness issues and competing on four fronts next season Chelsea could need five midfielders to deal with the demands of a long campaign.
