After 10 minutes, Manchester United were 1-0 up against Liverpool at Old Trafford last night.

The goal was scored by Red Devils midfielder Bruno Fernandes. However, the ball took a huge deflection off Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips before hitting the back of the net.

Gary Neville was commentating on the match for Sky Sports. Neville suggested that Phillips was in an awful position leading up to Manchester United’s first goal of the match.

Neville said the following on Sky Sports Premier League (8:25pm, May 13, 2021): “Why is a centre-back [Phillips] back in there? Why does he go back so deep? He is playing them onside, he is unlikely to block the shot. It’s difficult for him.

“I think Alisson would have saved that. Lack of composure from Nat Phillips. A disappointing moment for him, but a great moment for United.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Phillips was in Alisson’s way, which highlights that the centre-back was in a terrible position when Fernandes took his shot.

Alisson probably would have made the save had Phillips not interfered.

Phillips is an inexperienced centre-back. He has only made 18 appearances for Liverpool’s first-team, so he is going to make the odd mistake.

However, we believe that Phillips played reasonably well against Manchester United. The 25-year-old finished the match with a WhoScored player rating of 7.64, which backs up the aforementioned argument.

Phillips actually created the goal that got Liverpool back into the match. During the first half, Phillips passed the ball to Diogo Jota, and the Portuguese international did the rest.

The game was level at 1-1 because of Phillips’ pass. Liverpool went on to win the match 4-2.
