It was a result neither of the two sides wanted, but it was a result that makes the most sense.

When Manchester United faced Liverpool at Anfield, both the teams had a reputation of their own – the former remained unbeaten in away games; the hosts avoided defeat in their own backyard.

It makes mathematical sense that the game would end in a goalless draw, then. It is a common result between these two teams over the past few years. In their last 10 Premier League meetings, seven games have ended in a draw. This was the fourth goalless draw in their last seven meetings.

United fans would take respite from the fact that the club maintained their lead in the table. But captain Harry Maguire was not pleased with the draw.

“They started better than us but second half we came into a lot more,” he told Sky Sports. “We created the best chances and on another day we win. It was cagey. Two good teams matching up. We created openings and had two great chances, two great saves.

“There is a lot of talk of Liverpool being without their first-choice centre-halves but they’ve had a great defensive record since these injuries. They have lots of options.

“We wanted to win. You could see our intent in the second half, we wanted three points. We’ll feel a bit disappointed. It’s a tough place to come.

“You can see our performance compared to last year when we weren’t brave at all. We were a bit timid and didn’t play on the front foot. But in the second half today we had the intensity to go and win the game, which shows how far we’ve come.

“We’re not getting carried away. There’s a lot of improvement we’ve got to do as well, so we’ll work hard and get on the training pitch.”

Manchester United will face off against Fulham on Wednesday, as they look to extend their lead on top, especially with derby rivals Manchester City just two points behind them with a game in hand.
