More controversy has just emerged at Barcelona as the club announced multiple contract renewals at the same time. All four of Gerard Piqué, Frenkie de Jong, Marc-André ter Stegen and Clément Lenglet have just received new deals, ensuring their stay in Catalonia.
However, with Barcelona still in financial difficulties, the battle for the salary cuts still rages on. And according to a new report from Cuatro, there is a disagreement among the dressing-room heavy-weights over the best course of action.
Just as a reminder, Josep Maria Bartomeu wants the players to take another 30% reduction to ease the wage bill a bit. But since they’ve already gone through one cut, the majority of the players are refusing to cooperate.
The same source says Lionel Messi is leading the rebellion and has even hired a lawyer that will communicate the players’ wishes via a burofax. The whole squad with the exception of Ter Stegen, De Jong and Lenglet have apparently agreed to this, including Piqué himself.
But that’s indeed what’s now caused the reported rift. Despite agreeing to sign the burofax, Piqué has still accepted a contract renewal with the club. Now, it seems, the defender is siding with Bartomeu when it comes to salary cuts.
Needless to say, this is both a surprise and a disappointing turn of events for the rest of the team.
