Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has insisted that the club can win a Premier League title under Ruben Amorim.
Amorim has endured a mixed start to life since his appointment as Erik ten Hag’s replacement late last year. There have been some incredible results including wins over Arsenal, Manchester City and a draw against Liverpool. However, there have also been some humiliating defeats to the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.
The United head coach has repeatedly called for patience as he goes about trying to implement his style of play and this has now been echoed by Dalot.
Dalot sat down with the Local Supporters’ Club and was asked what he and his teammates could realistically achieve in the near future.
He answered, “If you want me to be completely honest, with this manager, I think we can win a Premier League. I think realistically we can win. But then it becomes the most difficult thing to hear as a fan: that it will take time.”
“I understand. I’m a player but, at the same time, I know what you feel. I know that this club is thirsty to win and everybody wants to win. We’re not talking about cups – I know that is important, to win trophies – but what brought this club to what it is is big trophies.”
“I think we can win a Premier League with this manager, but at the same time, we need to create an environment where he has everything set for what he wants from the players. We need to also adapt to the system. It will take some time.”
“Obviously we cannot think too much ahead, but I’m really convinced that the way he conducts himself, the way that he communicates with players, the idea that he has… we can do it. Now it becomes the most difficult part, but being really honest and positive about it, I think we can win big trophies with this manager.”
On the source of his optimism, Dalot remarked, “I see things a little bit differently. Obviously I share every day, every moment with my team-mates, with the people around the club, with the new staff as well, and you can see that there’s one way to go.”
“Sometimes when you are going that way, you have a lot of things that you need to change, and there’s a lot of change going on at the club, and it’s always difficult at this point where you want to change things but, at the same time, you need to win games. The last couple of months we have been trying to train during games, so it’s been a really tough process.”
The Portugal international added, “I don’t like to sound as if it’s always excuses, but it’s the reality, and sometimes we need to face it. But at the same time, we have been fighting and trying to get things better. But we also know that we have a lot of responsibility and we need to do much better than we have been doing in the last couple of games.”
“Because there’s some moments that we’ve shown we can be a good team; that we can do what the manager wants us to do. We’re just trying to find that consistency.”
Dalot revealed that his proudest moment at United has not been winning cup competitions but fighting to regain his place in the team following his transfer from Porto in 2018.
The 25-year-old initially found it hard to break into the first team and even had a loan spell at AC Milan.
Dalot also seemed to address his recent form, which hasn’t been the best over the past few games. He however noted that no one can accuse him of never giving everything on the pitch.
“Sometimes you’re always expecting the most enjoyable moments to be winning trophies or winning games and, obviously, if I have to remember, I had very good feelings when we won against PSG away, when I won my first trophy, in the Carabao, when we won the FA Cup final. The game here last year against Liverpool when we came back.”
“But I would say that the most proud moment that I have at this club was actually starting not really well, not playing a lot of times, and fighting for my place in the team.”
“Now, listen, people might like my football or not, but they cannot say that I don’t give everything for the club. That I don’t go to the pitch and I don’t feel what this club is about. That is the thing that I always try to pass from myself and from my team-mates and for the fans.”
“So that is my proudest moment so far: to say that I fought for a place in the team and tried to be a little more consistent about it.”
The defender insisted that it’s up to the players to give more energy to Old Trafford, in an effort to repay the fans for their loyal support even during troubling times.
This season especially, United’s home form has been poor, particularly in the Premier League.
“I think it’s not fair for me to expect that the fans would come here and think: ah, we’re going to win 4-0 every game, or we are so confident about the team. Because the results are not there.”
“Before I was a football player, I was a supporter as well. So I would go to watch Porto games, and if the team was not winning, I was not completely happy and ‘buzzing’ – just to use an expression from here! I was not buzzing about it. I would still go to support, but I was not top and positive about it.”
He continued, “We cannot come to the stadium and rely on the fans to give us energy so we can play well. This time, it has to be the other way around. We need to show that you need to support us because we are doing enough to win games, and that is the cycle that we want to put in, especially at home.”
“I think that’s where we can be much more better, in terms of dominating teams. Teams have to come here and be afraid to play against us. The reality is, at the moment, it’s not that. We have to go to that direction, because this is the history of the club.”
Dalot vowed that he and his United teammates will do everything possible to make Old Trafford a fortress once again.
