Manchester United fullback Diogo Dalot has claimed that losing a final is like dying on a beach.

The Portugal international won his race against time after recovering from injury to play a part in the Europa League final.

Sadly, the Red Devils fell to a disheartening 0-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and missed out on the chance of bringing silverware back to Old Trafford.

The defeat has an extra sting as it means United will not play in Europe next season for the first time since the 2014-2015 season.

Speaking to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Dalot opened up on the hurt of losing the final.

He lamented, “it’s a sad night. We came with the ambition to win the trophy. In the UEFA Europa League we had a competition with good results, we did enough to win, but we ended up not managing it.”

The 26 year old went on to claim that “losing in the last game is like dying on the beach, but it’s part of football.”

The latest defeat for Ruben Amorim’s side means that there will be no silver lining at the end of a pretty thundery season for all associated with Man United.

Reflecting on the campaign he asserted, “it’s a difficult season, with results far from what this club deserves, we have to take responsibility, it’s us on the pitch, we have to see what we can improve for next season.”

He also claimed that all the squad members will have to “do much better” if they are to prove that they deserve to be part of the side that eventually returns United to the top of domestic and European football.

Dalot criticised the rather non-sensical goal his side conceded from Brennan Johnson just before half-time.

He claimed, “it’s a difficult goal to accept, a rebound. We tried to look for it everywhere, we created enough to score, it’s a reflection of our era. We need to find that stability not only in the result but in the way we controlled the game.”

United have one more match to play against Aston Villa at the weekend before they can sign off on what has been a dismal season at Old Trafford.
