According to Sky Sports, Zoran Mamic has stepped down as the manager of Dinamo Zagreb ahead of their UEFA Europa League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham are set to play the Croatian outfit in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie on Thursday night. The first leg, played out last week, saw Tottenham grab a 2-0 victory courtesy of a Harry Kane brace.
And ahead of the second leg in less than three days, Mamic has had to step down from the job as Zagreb manager. This is because he was found guilty of money embezzlement and is set to serve a prison sentence along with brother Zdravko, who was Dinamo’s former executive director.
The ruling was confirmed on Croatia’s state television network HRT, with Mamic being handed a near five-year sentence for fraud. Upon the announcement, he immediately resigned from the post of the club’s manager.
“Although I don’t feel guilty, I resign as I said before I would do if the sentence was confirmed. I wish all the good luck to the club.”
Dinamo said the new coach would be the club’s former player Damir Krznar. It is a major development for the Croatian champions ahead of their huge clash against Tottenham later this Thursday.
While it was always going to be hard to turn over a two-goal deficit, recent developments will make it even tougher for Dinamo with their preparations being thrown awry by Mamic’s prison sentence and resignation.
Tottenham, for their part, go into the game on the back of a disappointing defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League. A strong, statement performance is needed from the club after the shabby display at the weekend.
