Schalke’s first away game of 2022 is at FC Erzgebirge Aue on Saturday (22/1) at 20:30 CET. Head coach Dimitrios Grammozis has all the players available from the Holstein Kiel game again, plus Marvin Pieringer, with the striker back after serving a suspension.

“Marvin is an option for the starting XI,” said Grammozis on the striker. “He played well before the winter break, held the ball up well and gave us chances to switch the play,” explained S04’s head coach. Grammozis will still be without Marcin Kaminski (effects of a Covid-19 infection), Mehmet Can Aydin (thigh injury) and Michael Langer (rehabilitation training after his ACL tear). Meanwhile, Marc Rzatkowski has been able to complete parts of team training this week.

Salif Sané, who started a game for the first time this season last weekend against Kiel, has recovered well, reported Grammozis. “The fact that Salif performed so well after such a long time out was really positive. That shows his quality,” praised Grammozis. The Schalke boss wouldn’t reveal who would start in central defence: “Marius Lode is another option for us in this position. We will try a few things out in training today and tomorrow.”

The aim for the Aue game will be to perform well for the whole 90 minutes, having only done so for around 55 minutes against Kiel according to Grammozis. “If we manage that, I’m confident we’ll win there,” he stated.

The 43-year-old described the upcoming opponents as a compact side that play with a lot of desire and will. “They use a back-three but can also adjust their system. They’ve got players that are good on the counter and they look to get in behind,” explained the head coach, who finished by saying: “We’re travelling to Aue to play our game.”
