"Difficult" - Leam Richardson sent Championship warning after Rotherham United exit

Leam Richardson will struggle to find another managerial role in the Championship following his sacking by Rotherham United.

That is according to former England international midfielder Carlton Palmer, who believes the 44-year-old is more likely to be back managing in League One next season.

Richardson was appointed as the Millers' manager in December last year, taking over following the sacking of Matt Taylor with the South Yorkshire outfit bottom of the Championship table.

However, the former Wigan Athletic manager was unable to secure a turnaround in fortunes for United.

He won just two of his 24 games in charge of the Millers, before being sacked earlier this week, with the club already guaranteed to finish bottom of the Championship this season.

Rotherham have since moved quickly to bring Steve Evans back to the club as his replacement, with 61-year-old departing League One side Stevenage to return to the New York Stadium just a few hours after Richardson's exit was confirmed.

Evans' first game back in charge of the club comes on Saturday afternoon, when they host another side who are still trying to retain their Championship status for next season, in the form of Birmingham City.

In the meantime, Richardson will now be on the lookout for his next role, although Palmer is not expecting that to be in the Championship.

Carlton Palmer makes Leam Richardson future prediction

Given how the Millers have struggled under Richardson this season, Palmer does not expect him to be walking straight back into the Championship with his next role.

That he believes, may also be down to the situation other clubs currently battling to stay in the second tier are in when it comes to their own managers.

However, the former England international is confident there will be opportunities to come for Richardson at League One level next season.

When asked by Football League World if he thinks any teams fighting to stay in the Championship will be interested in appointing Richardson as manager, Palmer said: "I think it would be difficult for Leam to pick up a Championship club for next season, given the situation at Rotherham and the results they've had and they've been relegated.

"The clubs down at the bottom of the table, I think Birmingham City, hopefully Tony Mowbray will recover and return to work, Huddersfield have announced a new manager.

"Sheffield Wednesday have Danny Rohl. I mean who knows if Danny's poached from Sheffield Wednesday whether Leam's somebody that Sheffield Wednesday would look at.

"But I doubt very much that he would get a Championship club, even with the sides that are facing relegation.

"So I think that he'll be looking to get a League One club where he's proven, he's got pedigree at that level and I'm sure that League One clubs will be looking at Leam's availability in the summer and hopefully he'll be back in work pretty soon."

Leam Richardson may need to look to League One for next job

It is hard to argue with this assessment of Richardson's future from Palmer, judging by how things have gone in the past.

Admittedly, this was always a challenging job for Richardson to take on, considering the position Rotherham were in when he took over.

However, the fact he was unable to turn around the situation in their favour, or even look like doing so when you consider the lack of wins, it would feel like a risk for another club in a similar position to take a gamble on him.

Indeed, it should also be noted that Richardson previously struggled for any success in the Championship when he previously took charge of Wigan Athletic at this level.

That too, is likely to mean second tier sides would be wary about making a move for Richardson when looking for a manager in the future.

However, he has previously done a brilliant job in stabilising the Latics when in an incredibly testing off-field position in League One, guiding them to safety and then promotion in two seasons in the third-tier at The DW Stadium.

That at least, should be enough to ensure there are other League One clubs who could be willing to offer Richardson a return to management next season.
