Former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann is not backing the club to qualify for the Champions League this season due to their recent form.

Hamann says it will be difficult for Liverpool to end the season in the top four as there are a few teams ahead of them in the table at the moment.

He claims Liverpool will need close to 20 points from the remaining matches to finish in the top four and does not believe that they will succeed in doing so.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, as transcribed by the Liverpool Echo, Hamann offered his thoughts on Liverpool’s Champions League hopes. “I think it will be very hard to finish in the top-four. They’re a few points behind and with a few teams in between.

“If they want to finish in the top-four, they probably need close enough to 20 points and I don’t think – they way they’re playing at the moment – they can do that.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

The Reds are only two points off the top four as it stands, but do have West Ham, Chelsea and Tottenham all to overtake before they can sit in a position where they could qualify for the Champions League. This means that they need to pick up two or more points from the next six games as all three teams – depending on goal difference. It is not the worst position to be in, given that they could be in the same place as Arsenal – who are nine points off the top-four in ninth place.

However, as Hamann explains, Liverpool’s form of late has not been strong enough to suggest that they will go on a big run until the end of the season. Liverpool have lost six of their last 11 matches in the Premier League and were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds in their last outing. If the Reds want to finish in the top four they could need to drastically improve their form, assuming Hamann’s prediction of them needing almost maximum points from their remaining games turns out to be accurate.
