Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri celebrates his 38th birthday on May 1. Revered by Portland Timbers fans as “Saint Valeri,” his impact on and off the field extends beyond goals and assists. Yet like any professional career, Valeri’s journey has included imperfections and moments of struggle, physical decline, and tactical limitations that paint a fuller picture of a player who embodied more than just statistics.
Valeri’s 2013 arrival in Portland was a turnaround point for the club. With his playmaking vision, composure in tight spaces, and knack for decisive goals, he quickly became the creative heartbeat of the Timbers. In 2015, he scored the opening goal in the MLS Cup final after 27 seconds, a record that still stands. The Timbers would go on the win the match and secure the franchise’s first Championship.
His MVP winning 2017 season, in which he scored 21 goals and provided 11 assists, placed him among the league’s elite. More than just a star, he became a symbol of stability and loyalty in a league often defined by short-term success and constant player movement.
However, while Valeri’s peak years were dazzling, his career and personal life were not without challenges. His early years at Lanús, a rough and tumble suburb in Buenos Aires, were hampered by injuries. His family suffered an armed carjacking in 2012 that led him to aggressively pursue playing abroad.
When he arrived in the MLS some doubted his ability to adapt to the physicality and demanding travel of the league. Though he proved those doubts wrong, the later years of his career revealed the inevitable effects of aging. His mobility declined, his defensive contributions waned, and in high intensity matches, he occasionally struggled to command the tempo as he once did. These signs weren’t failures but rather the natural arc of a veteran in a demanding role.
Valeri also had to adjust to evolving dynamics within the Timbers. As Portland introduced new talent and refined its tactical identity, Valeri sometimes found himself relegated to a secondary role not because of diminished loyalty, but because the team’s needs changed. Though clearly affected, he handled this transition with dignity and professionalism, even if it came with emotional strain.
Valeri was a pillar of the Portland community. He became known for his charitable efforts and quiet leadership. His influence reached beyond the locker room, embodying the spirit of a league still defining its identity on the global stage.
In 2022, Valeri returned briefly to Lanús before announcing his retirement. It was a fitting end to a journey that had come full circle return to where it all began. His farewell may not have made global headlines, but it was authentic, gracious, and heartfelt much like his playing style.
Saint Valeri’s story is one of brilliance tempered by humility. He was not flawless like few icons are but in embracing both his triumphs and his trials, he built a legacy that is both human and heroic. At 38, he may no longer wear a jersey, but his influence still resonates in Portland and far beyond.
Indeed! Let us send Saint Valeri a Toast and wish him a Happy Birthday!
