Luis Suárez came to Atlético Madrid’s rescue on Thursday night as his 89th-minute penalty proved to be the difference in their 2-1 victory over Eibar.

Though Suárez came through with his 10th and 11th goals of the season to put Atlético seven points clear, the match will likely be remembered for Eibar goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović scoring a classy penalty past Jan Oblak to put the home side ahead early.

Luis Suárez is now the first Uruguayan in history to score 500 goals in professional football.

After the match, manager Diego Simeone waxed lyrical over the Uruguayan legend, claiming that the difference in the match simply came down to individual brilliance.

“After their penalty, they felt safer. Then we improved a bit and Suárez’s goal appeared,” Simeone said in his post-match press conference.

“It allowed us to go into half-time tied. In the second half, there was more of the same, a complex game, without many chances.

“We made a change so we could see how the game was developing, to see if Saúl could give us more play with Torreira.

“Little happened because there was not much attack but when they combined on the left we could do damage.

“Suárez is one of the best players in LaLiga, he was always playing intensely in the game. He found the goal from a loose ball and then the penalty was generated and manufactured.

“It’s why he’s one of the best.”
