Diego Godin will act as Antonio Conte’s on-pitch ‘lieutenant’ this season after the Uruguayan completed a move to Inter, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 33-year-old’s arrival from Atletico Madrid means the Nerazzurri have their own version of Juventus’ infamous ‘BBC’, with Godin joining Stefan De Vrij and Milan Skriniar.
The paper praised what they called the ‘GDS’ and highlighted the leadership qualities Godin would provide.
“Diego wasn’t just the captain with Atletico and Uruguay, he was a real and proper extension of his managers Diego Simeone and Oscar Tabaerez,” they explained.
“Conte knows he can expect application and strong performances from De Vrij and Skriniar, but perhaps neither of them have the character, age or experience to lead the group like Godin will.”
Juventus enjoyed unrivaled success with their defensive trio of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini and Conte hopes he can win more titles with his new three-man wall.
“Skriniar and De Vrij already proved they were complementary last season,” Gazzetta continued.
“The Slovak is good at anticipating danger and unbeatable in one-on-one situations, while the Dutch has positional sense, an excellent timing which enables him to cover holes and a tactical intelligence that you need to play in a back three.”
Godin’s biggest strength is arguably his heading ability, with 85% of the 27 goals he scored at Atletico coming in the air.
