Club América are a club that are always willing to go above and beyond to gain international prestige and, at one point, they nearly landed a football icon.
It’s been revealed that while Diego Forlan was at Atlético Madrid and plotting his next move, he fielded offers from all over the world, including from the Mexican giants themselves.
“I would have loved it (to play in Liga MX), sincerely,” Forlan said.
“I had several offers, many approaches from América, Cruz Azul, and also Santos and Monarcas.
“But other offers came across as well, such as those from Japan and Brazil.
“In the end, they were decisions that I had to make.”
Folan ended up going to Inter Milan for a single season before making the move to Internacional (Brazil) and Cerezo Osaka (Japan).
The Uruguayan would finish his career at boyhood club Peñarol (winning the title), three months in India at Mumbai City, followed by a season in Hong Kong at Kitchee, winning the title there as well.
