Didier Drogba was spotted wandering around the pitch in the aftermath of Chelsea’s Club World Cup win, and was seen congratulating players and coaches, and even the club owner Roman Abramovich.
Some bright spark grabbed him for an interview, and the focus was on Romelu Lukaku, a striker just like Drogba, but one who has been struggling since coming back to Chelsea.
Drogba was full of confidence that the Belgian front man can get back to his best form, having just seen him score a towering header in the final against Palmeiras.
“[Lukaku is] a goalscorer, he has done that before and he’s having a difficult moment, but bouncing back this kind of trophy will bring his confidence back,” Drogba said in quotes picked up by the Metro.
“I think he will [come good]. He put himself under a certain pressure because coming back to the club where your start was difficult and you come back because you want to prove a point, but he’s winning and I think he’s going to make it.”
It’s interesting to hear that Didier thinks it’s winning the Club World Cup that will bring Lukaku’s confidence back. He did have a smile on his face at full time, despite now having celebrated the goal much.
What we need is for him to score in front of a paced Stamford Bridge, so he can really feel the love, and we can get moving on his rehabilitation program with the fans.
This was a start, and hopefully Drogba is right and it brings a new wave of confidence back for Rom.
