Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has revealed he has spoken to Roman Abramovich about the club owner’s hiring and firing policy.
Since Abramovich arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2003, Chelsea have had 12 different managers (including José Mourinho and Guus Hiddink twice each).
Current boss Antonio Conte has now managed 51 games, only the fourth man to do so since Claudio Ranieri was forced to leave in 2004.
Speaking with the Chelsea owner, Drogba finally received an explanation.
“Everyone says Chelsea isn’t very stable,” said the Ivorian.
“But in modern-day football, there is no coach who lasts more than three or four years at a club.
“I asked him [Abramovich]: ‘We have had how many managers in how many seasons?’ He replied: ‘But Didier, each time I have done it, we have got results.'”
It’s hard to argue with that, especially in recent years. Abramovich has generally aided managers in the transfer market (though Antonio Conte is displeased with the current, more stringent, policy) and hasn’t meddled with team affairs since the failed signing of Andriy Shevchenko in 2006.
“When the managers come in they have carte blanche at the club,” said Drogba.
“They do what they want.
“Having said that, I don’t see the relationship with the chairman on a daily basis. But you can’t get into a conflict with your boss. If that’s the case, it’s that you want to leave.”
