Bradley Barcola (21) is yet to make his debut for the France national team. Historically, Didier Deschamps has shown himself reticent towards calling up uncapped players for major tournaments but the Paris Saint-Germain forward may be an exception to the rule.

With the fitness of Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku a major concern for Les Bleus heading into this summer’s tournament in Germany, Barcola, who has impressed in recent weeks for PSG, especially in the UEFA Champions League, looks primed to profit from their potential absences.

Despite those performances, Barcola wasn’t called up by Deschamps for the final international break before Euro 2024, in March. It was therefore interpreted that the former Olympique Lyonnais winger’s chances of making the squad this summer were minimal.

However, speaking to AFP, Deschamps has opened the door to the uncapped Barcola. “It’s not because I don’t have a habit of calling up players in the final stage (major tournaments) that haven’t previously been selected that I won’t prevent myself from doing so. I don’t work within these kinds of rules,” began the France manager.

He added, “I am not conservative and I don’t make choices based on what people will think. Since March, Barcola has backed up his positive steps.” The door is therefore very much ajar for Barcola, who may be in line to make his debut for Les Bleus in Germany this summer.
