As announced at the start of January, Didier Deschamps will step down as manager of the France national team after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted in Mexico, the US, and Canada.
In order to avoid speculation regarding the managerial situation in the lead-up to and the duration of the tournament next summer, he made an early decision and, speaking for the first time since that decision in an interview with L’Équipe, Le Parisien, and Le Figaro, he has made it clear that he will not go back on it.
Deschamps has described Zinédine Zidane, rumoured to have wanted to national team job for many years, as a “natural” and “logical” candidate for the position. The incumbent hastened to add that it was not exactly clear whether the former Real Madrid manager would accept the role.
As well as the question of who will replace Deschamps for Les Bleus, there is also a question about what the current France manager will do next. “I am not closing any door. I will be available but I don’t have anything in mind for now. I will choose based on the offers that I’ll have,” he told L’Équipe, whilst rejecting any suggestions that he will be retiring.
He added that it is unlikely that he will take charge of another national team and opened the door to a return to club management. “Managing a team like PSG? I’m not closing the door,” he told Le Parisien.
