Speaking to TF1 in the aftermath of his France team’s 4-0 win over The Netherlands for their first Euro 2024 qualifier, Didier Deschamps was pleased to see a complete performance from his players, who showed no signs of any post-World Cup hangover as they entered a new era.

The national team manager did, however, highlight that the opposing side had several absentees as a caveat to the performance – Ronald Koeman was missing the likes of Cody Gakpo and Matthijs De Ligt as a result of a virus in the Dutch camp. He also pointed out that the team could not rest on their laurels right now, given that they have another match in just three days – this time a trip to Dublin.

“It’s a great return, even if this Dutch side had a few issues. It doesn’t take away from what we achieved, and from the atmosphere, and the fact that we didn’t concede at the end. It’s great, it’s important to win at home but now we have another match coming up. We don’t have long to recover.”

Les Bleus saw off a disjointed Netherlands side thanks to a double from Kylian Mbappé in his first match as captain, with newly-named vice-captain Antoine Griezmann as well as Dayot Upamecano also finding the net.
