Former Red Didi Hamann believes that midfielder Naby Keita will never be the player that Liverpool thought they had signed from RB Leipzig.

Keita has been at Anfield since 2018. The midfielder has made a total of 51 appearances for the club.

Hamann ultimately believes that the Guinea international will not be able to repeat the form that he showed at RB Leipzig in a Liverpool shirt.

Hamann believes this because of the way that Jurgen Klopp sets up his team.

“The patience with Keita is still there,” Hamann told James Pearce, who works for the Athletic.

“Some players make a major breakthrough after three or four years at a club. It does happen. I don’t see Klopp giving up on him any time soon. But whether you could get a big fee for him and that money could be better spent elsewhere is maybe something that will need to be considered.

“The question is does Keita really believe he can become a major part of the team? Will the penny drop? Personally, I don’t think he will ever be the player at Liverpool that everyone expected him to be when he first signed because of the way the team sets up. But there’s still plenty of room for improvement. It’s down to him.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

I really hope Keita goes on and proves Hamann wrong. There is no denying that Keita has not been at his best since he made the move to Liverpool.

To back that particular statement up, Keita has only scored six goals and registered two assists from the 51 games that he has played for Liverpool.

At RB Leipzig, Keita scored 17 goals and registered 15 assists from 71 appearances. That does show that he was performing at a much higher level in Germany in comparison to England.

Keita can prove Hamann wrong in my opinion, as he has shown in Germany that he is a good footballer, which can be backed up by the aforementioned numbers.
