Bayern Munich have been eliminated from this season’s DFB Pokal in the second round, losing to 3. Liga side 1. FC Saarbrücken in what is one of the biggest cup upsets in recent years.

Thomas Tuchel made five changes to the starting eleven with the Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in the Bundesliga Topspiel in mind. Thomas Müller put the Rekordmeister in the lead in the 16th minute and it should have been plain sailing from there. But Saarbrücken fought and responded well with Patrick Sontheimer equalising for his side heading into the break.

Saarbrücken would continue their fight in the second half and in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Marcel Gaus scored a winner for the hosts, sending the home support into a frenzy.

Speaking post-match, Müller offered a seething response to Bayern’s exit in the second round: “It’s not necessarily about the game or the result. What is not possible at all is that only three or four players understand how to respect the support. They came here; I don’t know how many 100 kilometres during the week. The most important thing is to understand how to give something back.”

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund narrowly overcome an in-form Hoffenheim side with Marco Reus scoring the only goal. Wolfsburg would also go on to eliminate holders RB Leipzig in another upset, while FC Köln found themselves 3-0 down against 2. Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern- eventually bringing the tie back to 3-2, but ultimately it was too late.

Union Berlin’s poor form would continue and they have now lost their last 11 games across all competitions after a defeat to Stuttgart, while Freiburg are another Bundesliga side eliminated in the second round following a defeat to Paderborn. Like Union, Mainz’ poor form continues after losing 3-0 at Hertha Berlin.

Alongside Saarbrücken’s win, another story of the round is that of Regionalliga side (4th tier) FC 08 Homburg, who beat 2. Bundesliga club Greuther Furth- they are the lowest ranked team remaining in the competition.
