Alfie Devine scored and provided an assist as England Under-20s booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA World Cup with a 3-2 win over Uruguay on Thursday night.

The attacking midfielder first set up Bashir Humphreys for England's opener, crossing in from a corner for the Chelsea defender to head home on 22 minutes.

Alfie then struck in added time at the end of the first half for his nation's second. Match-winner in England's first group game, Dane Scarlett won the long ball from goalkeeper Matthew Cox before Mateo Joseph slid in Alfie who lashed in from the angle, giving his side a healthy advantage at the break.

Uruguay halved the deficit quickly after the restart with Franco Gonzalez firing home a rebound from close range but a strike from Leeds United's Darko Gyabi in added time restored England's two-goal advantage.

Although there was late drama as in the final minute of the nine added on, Matias Abaldo grabbed a second for the South American side, but the Young Lions held on in the final seconds to take all three points and secure qualification with one game to go in Group E.

They face Iraq in that final group game on Sunday (28 May) - kick-off 7pm (BST) - with the knockout stages commencing from 30 May.
