Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the details of Liverpool’s pursuit of Ousmane Dembele earlier this summer.

Romano claims that Liverpool made an offer to take the Barcelona forward on loan for the season with an option to sign him permanently for an unspecified amount.

He goes on to say that Dembele turned down the chance to move to Anfield as he wants to stay at Barcelona instead of coming to the Premier League.

Manchester United have also denied that they are in talks to sign the forward and have not made a bid for the French international.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Liverpool announced the signing of Diogo Jota from Wolves on a long-term contract earlier this month, potentially filling the spot the club were eyeing Dembele for. Jota, who is the same age (23) as Dembele, contributed with 16 goals for Wolves last season, whilst the Frenchman only made three starts for Barcelona in La Liga.

This suggests that Jota is more equipped to come in at Anfield and make an instant impact on the first-team squad in order to push the front three for their place in the side. Jota also has the Premier League experience on his side after two seasons in the top-flight with Wolves, something Dembele does not have after spending the majority of his senior career to date in Germany and Spain.

So, Liverpool appear to have got a better deal on paper in regards to comparing Dembele and Jota. Hopefully, Jota will be able to show in the coming months that he can provide quality off the bench and in rotation for Jurgen Klopp in order to help the club compete across multiple competitions.
