When Joško Gvardiol (21) moves to Manchester City from RB Leipzig, the Croatian international will become the most expensive defender in the world, surpassing the €87m that Manchester United paid to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City in 2019.

As reported by Sport1, Gvardiol’s move to Manchester City is expected to be finalised by the end of the week. As part of the deal, RB Leipzig will receive a fixed €90m with the Bundesliga side receiving a further €10m through various bonus payments, which would see Manchester City break the €100m barrier to sign the defender.

Gvardiol signed for Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in 2021 for just short of €19m, and the Croatian side will receive 15% of the transfer fee Leipzig receive. As noted by Sport1, the player is expected to fly to England in the coming hours and will complete his medical check. He also took no part in the annual Media Day, instead saying goodbye to his teammates.

Who replaces Gvardiol?

Leipzig have already signed left-footed defender El Chadaille Bitshiabu (18) from PSG for a reported €15m. Leipzig are also in concrete negotiations with Lyon to sign Castello Lukeba (20), but are expected to see their third offer, a reported €32m, for the French U21 international rejected.

The Bundesliga side remain consistent in their efforts to sign Lukeba, and are expected to meet Lyon’s €34m valuation. Leipzig have a five-year contract ready for the French youth international.
