Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong opted against even opening a message sent his way by Premier League giants Manchester United, back in the summer of 2022.
That’s according to Diario Sport, citing The Athletic, who have on Wednesday provided an insight into the details of the message.
Manchester United’s pursuit of midfielder De Jong of course proved one of the talking points of the summer transfer window two years ago.
This came as Erik ten Hag set his sights on a reunion with his fellow countryman at Old Trafford.
In the end, no such move was forthcoming, with De Jong himself having made clear to the powers that be in Manchester that he had no intention of departing Barcelona.
This only came, though, after the Red Devils had employed a number of club legends, to put together a video-based plea to the 27-year-old.
As per a report from Sport:
‘In their attempt to sign Frenkie De Jong, Manchester United sent him a video in which historic players of the club appeared trying to convince the Dutch footballer to leave FC Barcelona to join Ten Hag’s team.’
In the end, such efforts proved to be in vain, though, with it concluded that De Jong ‘never even opened the video’.
