Olympique de Marseille are delighted to announce the signing of Derek Cornelius from Malmö FF. The 26-year-old defender has signed for the club after passing his medical.

Born in Ontario, Canada, and trained in Germany, Derek Cornelius began his professional career in earnest in 2017 with FK Javor Ivanjica in the Serbian top-flight. His solid performances in central defence attracted the attention of Canada's national coach, as well as scouts in his native country, more specifically the Vancouver Whitecaps, whom he joined in the winter of 2019.

Playing for the Blue-and-White in Major League Soccer, the robust centre-back made 37 appearances for the club, before heading out on loan to Greek side Panetolikós FC for the 2021/2022 season. After a successful spell in Greece, Derek Cornelius moved to the Allsvenskan with historic club Malmö FF. With Sweden's most successful club, the Canadian showed off his power, pace and aerial prowess, scoring 6 goals in 47 appearances and winning an Allsvenskan title and a national cup.

A player with a great sense of anticipation, Derek Cornelius has 26 caps for Canada and was in the squad for the 2022 World Cup. Last month, he took part in the Copa América 2024 alongside his compatriot Ismaël Koné, with whom he reached the last four of the competition.
