Birmingham City are leading the race to sign ex-Derby County defender Eiran Cashin on loan from Brighton this summer.

According to journalist Dan Marsh, the Blues are favourites to sign the centre-back on a temporary basis after he struggled for game time in Fabian Hurzeler’s squad after his January switch.

Cashin came through the Rams’ academy system, and proved a key part of the side until his departure to the Seagulls in the winter market earlier this calendar year.

But he made just two appearances in the Premier League after his move to the Amex, both of which came as a substitute.

When asked about his potential move to Birmingham, FLW’s Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward claimed that it would be a bitter pill to swallow to see him at another Championship side.

He believes it is a strange move, and that he doesn’t understand how this is what Cashin’s next move will be so soon after leaving Pride Park.

“It’s a really strange one, for me,” Woodward told Football League World.

“I thank Eiran Cashin for the service he gave to Derby, he was superb for us for a number of years, and he could’ve left Derby before he did for a lot less money, so he got us a lot of money at a time when we really needed it.

“So, we’ll be forever grateful for that.

“But I think to go to Brighton, to then go out six months later to Birmingham, to me it feels like a step backwards in his career.

“With all due respect to Birmingham, I just feel like if he was to go out on loan to a Championship club, I find it hard to believe it wouldn’t be us.

“I thought there may have been something in his contract to say that we get first refusal if he was to leave or go out on loan, so I do find it a bit of a tough one, a bitter pill to swallow, if I’m completely honest, that he would go to Birmingham.

“Because he would still walk into our side.

“Yes, we signed Danny Batth but he’s in his 30s, Nelson is injured, Langas is injured, so the thought of Cashin and Clarke together at the back would’ve been an excellent prospect.

“But, I’m very disappointed about the fact he will potentially be going to Birmingham, if that’s the case, I would’ve loved to have seen him back in a Derby shirt for the season.

“But it’s a strange old time, and I definitely don’t understand it, personally.”

John Eustace’s Derby side will start their Championship campaign with a trip to face Stoke City on 9 August.

Cashin’s move to Brighton not worked out so far

It’s clear that Cashin hasn’t been able to show Hurzeler enough to give him regular game time, so a loan move being on the cards isn’t a total surprise.

However, a move to Birmingham is unexpected, and Derby supporters won’t be pleased to see him back in the Championship so soon.

We don’t know the full details of the negotiations, but it will be interesting to see what kind of reception he receives if he features at Pride Park for the Blues in this upcoming season.

While Derby have benefitted financially from his departure, it will hurt fans to see that his career has stalled in the brief time since his departure.
