Blackburn have turned down an offer in excess of £1.5m from Derby County for captain Lewis Travis.
Blackburn have turned down a second offer from Derby County for captain Lewis Travis, with the latest bid in excess of £1.5m.
The 27-year-old has been a consistent performer for Rovers over the years, but with his contract expiring in 12 months' time, there are major doubts about his future.
It has been claimed that a host of clubs are tracking the midfielder, with Football League World exclusively confirming that Derby were emerging as frontrunners for his signature earlier this summer.
In a fresh development, The Times revealed that the East Midlands outfit have had an offer worth £1.5m plus add-ons turned down by Blackburn, who are holding out for £2.5m for their key man.
However, the update adds that the Rams are growing ‘increasingly frustrated’ with their pursuit of Travis, as they look to reunite the player with former boss John Eustace at Pride Park.
As a result, they are now considering whether to move on to other targets.
Yet, that would be a risky strategy from Blackburn due to Travis' contract situation at Ewood Park, and there is no sign that a new deal is on the table, or close to being signed.
It’s also said that Travis would rather leave Blackburn for a fee this summer, as opposed to walking away for nothing next year.
Travis is a very good Championship player, so this would be an excellent bit of business for Derby, but you can understand why the club won’t want to overpay.
The contract situation of the midfielder means Blackburn are in a vulnerable position, and Derby obviously know that, so they will feel they can pick the player up for a bargain.
But, you can understand why Rovers have turned down an initial £1.5m offer, as it’s not a huge sum for someone who has impressed in the Championship over the years - a division in which he's made over 240 appearances in *per Transfermarkt*
He would still be a key figure for Valerien Ismael if he sticks around, however, and so there is a clear motivation for Rovers to resist any bids that fall below their valuation.
Despite the Rams’ threat to walk away from the deal, you get the feeling this could be a transfer saga that runs right up until the 1 September deadline.
The Rams will want to get this over the line if possible, as Eustace knows the player, and he will be aware of what he can bring to the team both on the pitch and with his leadership in the dressing room.
