The 31-year-old has been the subject of much transfer interest over the years but is thought to be one of the players who has tendered his notice to exit the club after not receiving payment in two of the last three months.

As per Alex Miller of the Sheffield Star, Championship trio Derby County, Norwich City and Coventry City are all believed to be considering a move for the forward.

Whilst all three clubs will have their reasons for securing Windass’ services, John Eustace’s side may be the most in need of the Wednesday man.

Derby should push for Josh Windass move – it would give them an extra spark in attack

Only three teams scored less goals than Derby in the Championship last season, so it’s no wonder that they are targeting Windass this summer.

The Rams have already acquired Carlton Morris from Luton Town and are in the final stages of completing a deal for Charlotte FC striker Patrick Agyemang.

If Eustace could add Windass to this mix, he would have upgraded his frontline tenfold in just a few months and given Championship defences real reason to worry next term.

Last season saw the 31-year-old register 13 goals and five assists in the Championship last term, which would’ve made him Derby’s leading contributor.

Windass took three shots a game on average last season, so would provide a constant goal threat for the Rams.

Enjoying an 82% passing accuracy and creating 31 chances across last season’s Championship campaign also shows how efficiently the forward can produce opportunities for other teammates.

He would complement Morris and Agyemang in forward areas, acting as an option to link up with to confuse opposition backlines.

Windass has previously combined with strikers such as Callum Paterson and Michael Smith, who are similar profiles to Derby’s current crop, so he knows how to get the best out of that type of attacker.

The Sheffield Wednesday man’s potential arrival could leave fellow new recruit Weimann questioning where he fits into Eustace’s plans, with both players operating out of similar areas.

The Rams have shown that they are willing to back their new manager substantially in the transfer market and taking Windass on a free would make huge amounts of sense.

His quality to make a moment out of nothing and finish clinically are attributes that are increasingly hard to come across in attackers.

Eustace has shown that he can work wonders with a limited squad in the past, so adding talent such as Windass to his squad could move the boundaries regarding what is possible for Derby next season.

Derby County will have their work cut out for them to convince Josh Windass to join

For the Rams, signing Windass would be a perfect move and one that would automatically elevate the success of their transfer window.

However, with clubs such as Coventry City and Norwich involved, convincing the 31-year-old to choose Pride Park will be easier said than done.

Wrexham have also held a well-documented interest in the Sheffield Wednesday attacker, so Derby certainly have their work cut out for them.

Those three outfits may have a better chance of fighting for promotion on paper and may be able to offer more substantial financial packages.

Therefore, Eustace will have to rely on his brilliant man-management skills to prove why Derby County is the best option for Windass in the next step in his career.
