Derby County technical director Steve McClaren is set to lose his role as part of the financial cutbacks following administration but has a potential new position lined up, according to a report from The Sun.

The Rams appointed administrators last week and were subsequently handed a 12-point deduction, with suggestions that more penalties from the EFL could follow.

The Sun has reported that McClaren is set to be the first casualty as financial cutbacks are made to ensure that the East Midlands club can keep afloat.

It is understood that the 60-year-old was hired by the club on a consultancy basis and is therefore easy to let go.

The report claims that McClaren has a potential job lined up should he depart as expected with both FIFA and UEFA keen to hire him as part of their think tanks.

The Englishman returned to Pride Park in his current role in November last year having had two previous spells as Rams manager, which saw him take charge for 123 matches in total.

The Verdict

McClaren’s departure makes a lot of sense given he arrived in an advisory capacity last year and is seemingly easy to let go given he was hired on a consultancy basis.

This update is unlikely to draw much concern among the Pride Park faithful as fans have questioned the influence of the 60-year-old previously.

Keeping the club afloat and ensuring Wayne Rooney stays is vital, so if this decision helps that then you have to feel it’s a positive move.

It’s no real surprise that McClaren has got another role lined up due to his experience in the game and some of his previous roles.

It’ll be interesting to see who else is let go over the coming weeks.
