Derby County have had a very good season so far, as they sit second in the League One table as they push for a return to the Championship with two games to go.

So, it’s all in the hands of the Rams’, who know that victories against Cambridge and Carlisle United will see them secure a top two finish.

Eiran Cashin and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing make Team of the Year

Of course, it’s been a real team effort to put Paul Warne’s side in second place, but there have been a few outstanding individuals for Derby, with Eiran Cashin starring in central defence, and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing having been a major attacking threat all season.

So, it wasn’t too much of a surprise to see the pair recognised for their displays, as it was announced on Monday night that they had made the League One Team of the Year.

Given the quality in the third tier this season, that is a great honour for the duo, and it proves how consistent they have been over the past eight months or so.

Eiran Cashin reacts to individual recognition

After receiving the award, Cashin took to Instagram to reveal his pride, as he also heaped praise on teammate Mendez-Laing.

Delighted to have made it into the Sky Bet League One Team of the Season. Congrats to Mendez-Laing, fully deserved mate.”

As you would expect, Cashin’s Derby teammates were also pleased for the player, with Conor Hourihane and Louis Sibley among those to reply to the post from the defender.

Hourihane told the Irish youngster that his place in the XI was ‘well deserved’, with Sibley putting ‘love it mate’, and Mendez-Laing was another to congratulate Cashin.

Eiran Cashin’s future

It’s clear that the 22-year-old is enjoying his time at Pride Park, as they gave him his big opportunity in football, and he’s now made over 100 appearances for the Rams.

However, there has been plenty of speculation surrounding Cashin’s future in recent windows, with Brighton among the list of clubs admiring the brave centre-back.

But, in a major boost for Derby, it was confirmed in February that Cashin had agreed terms on a new contract that would keep him at the club until the summer of 2027.

Obviously, that doesn’t mean he won’t be sold, and the reality is that, like most clubs in the Football League, the Rams will have to consider a big offer if he does arrive, but the contract means they are protected and capable of landing a significant fee.

In reality, if Derby do go up, it’s hard to see Cashin leaving, as he would likely be a regular in the Championship, and it will be good for his development if he continues to get game time at that level.

Yet, failure to go up will no doubt bring questions about his future, so it’s one to monitor in the coming months when the window is in full swing. For now though, Cashin’s only focus will be on helping Derby to two wins to help them back to the Championship.
