Speaking at a sombre press conference following Denmark’s 1-0 loss to Australia that saw the Danes finish bottom of Group D and exit the World Cup, despite being tipped by many to progress deep into the tournament, defender Simon Kjær tried to make sense of the situation. The AC Milan defender said:
“We had high expectations, just like the ones back home. So we’re sorry – that we didn’t manage to play our game. There were moments when we were close… but perhaps that was what defined our three matches. We have to take the defeat, and say that this was not good enough… We have not become worse footballers since the last play-off round before the tournament, but it’s tough to accept.”
Denmark were semi-finalists at the European Championships just a year ago and beat world champions France twice in the nations league but were unable to replicate that form in the 0-0 draw with Tunisia and defeats France and the Socceroos in Qatar.
