With Atlético Madrid losing to Sevilla at the weekend, the Blaugrana knew that a victory here could take them to within a point of the top.

Lionel Messi went closest early on as he whipped a free kick just outside the left-hand post while Ousmane DembĂ©lé’s persistent running was causing the visitors all sorts of problems.

But it was Real Valladolid who should have opened the scoring midway through the half as Kenan Kodro fired a header off the crossbar.

Into the second half and the home side continued to falter in front of goal, Antoine Griezmann the culprit this time as his header went just wide of the left-hand post after a quick counter-attack.

Valladolid went down to 10-men late on as Óscar Plano received a straight red card for a cynical trip on DembĂ©lĂ©.

And it was the France international who eventually made the breakthrough in stoppage time as he volleyed in at the far post to give the Catalan club another win.
