Two-goal Man of the Match Andy Delort was thrilled after his Montpellier side booked a place in the Coupe de France semis after a dramatic 2-1 win over OM-killers Canet-en-Rousillon in the quarters on Tuesday night.

If Montpellier were expecting an easy time of things as they made the short trip to their south-western neighbours for their quarter-final tie, they quickly realised that Canet-en-Roussillon had distinctly different ideas. 'Well done to Canet'

The locals, deprived of a league season in the National 2 (D4) by the pandemic and doubtless buoyed by their stunning 2-1 win over Marseille in the Round of 32, bolted out of the gate. Twenty-five minutes in, they were a goal - and a man - up after MHSC captain Vitorino Hilton saw red and Toufik Ouadoudi converted the resulting penalty. "Well done to Canet, who didn't make it easy for us, and above all well done to my team, who fought and believed until the end. I often say that these matches are good for the mind," explained the fiercely competitive Delort. "We know that these are complicated matches. That's the beauty of the cup. I love these games and these situations." 'Just a win away from the final'

Indeed, Montpellier hit back in the final half-hour with Delort latching onto a quickly taken free-kick and firing an angled shot home before hitting the winner from the spot when substitute Sepe Elye Wahi was brought down in the area with just six minutes to go. "We got eaten up in the challenges; we didn't get into the match properly," explained Delort. "In Chateaubriand we only won 1-0, and in Alès it was complicated, but the most important thing is that we won and that we went a step further in the competition. Now we're in the semis and just a win away from the final." Montpellier will know more about who their semi-final opponents may be after PSG take on Angers and Lyon do battle with Monaco In Wednesday night's quarter-final action, but they could also come up against minnows Rumilly-Vallières, who ousted Ligue 2 high flyers Toulouse 2-0, also on Tuesday.
