Were the circumstances surrounding Julian Nagelsmann’s contract extension with the DFB a payback from the coach against FC Bayern? Those responsible in Munich apparently believe it was an act of revenge.
The talks between Bayern bosses and coach Julian Nagelsmann were already at an advanced stage, but in the end the national coach announced his contract extension with the DFB until 2026. According to Sport BILD, Bayern bosses see the actions of Nagelsmann and his management as payback for the club’s decision to part ways with the former Bayern coach in March 2023.
At the time, Nagelsmann was sacked by former CEO Oliver Kahn and former sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic in an overnight operation, taking him completely by surprise.
This time, however, the Bayern bosses were taken by surprise by the actions of the Nagelsmann side. On the day of Bayern’s important second leg of the quarter-final against FC Arsenal (1:0), Nagelsmann’s advisor Volker Struth spoke about Bayern’s negotiations with his client in a podcast he produced himself. He announced a decision in the next „five, six or seven days“.
The press release with the statements came out at exactly 10.58 pm, practically at the same time as the final whistle of the Bayern game. In the interview area of the Allianz Arena, the Bayern managers around sporting director Max Eberl were completely surprised by Struth’s quotes. According to Sport BILD, the bosses suddenly realised that if the Nagelsmann side were still serious about a return to Munich, they would not have made such details of the negotiations public.
The suspicion, according to the report, was that the Nagelsmann side were only using Bayern’s interest to put themselves in a better position in the negotiations with the DFB over an extension. This is apparently what happened: On Thursday after Bayern’s game against Arsenal, negotiations were held again with the DFB, and on Friday, Nagelsmann’s extension until after the 2026 World Cup was made public.
The result: This time, Nagelsmann caught Bayern unprepared – and Munich will have to continue their search for a new coach.
