Joining Besiktas was supposed to be the catalyst for Dele Alli getting his professional football career back on track.

But sadly, it hasn’t panned out that way thus far.

After a promising start to life out in Turkey, Alli’s career has sunk to a new low.

Last week, an update emerged in which Besiktas’ sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci went in on the Englishman.

“No-one can answer whether Dele Alli can do it right now,” was the start of his tirade on Alli’s ‘progress’ at the club, which is pretty damning.

And it seems Kazanci’s speech hasn’t worked as a motivational tool with regards to Alli’s career at Besiktas.

On Wednesday evening, the man who was a key player for England at the 2018 World Cup was handed a start in a Turkish Cup match against third division side Şanlıurfaspor.

The perfect setting for Alli to launch a comeback? Think again.

Instead of lighting up the show with some slick playmaking and a couple of goals, the former Tottenham Hotspur man was subbed off after just 29 minutes with Besiktas trailing 2-0 on home soil.

To make matters worse, a chorus of boos rang round Vodafone Park as Alli departed the field of play prematurely.

Substitutions don’t get anymore humiliating than that…

You have to feel for the guy and his decline from potential global superstar to the player seen above is just so hard to explain.

The way it’s going for Alli, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him hang up his boots for good in the near future.

Of course, we don’t want that to happen and hope Alli rediscovers something close to his best form on the European stage.

Besiktas eventually won Turkish Cup game 4-2

After Alli left the field of play, Besiktas mounted a comeback against Şanlıurfaspor to secure passage to the next round of the Turkish Cup.

A brace from Cenk Tosun, the goals coming in the 67th and 70th minutes, levelled the scores at 2-2.

Late strikes from Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Wout Weghorst – who famously scored a double against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup – then handed the advantage to Besiktas, as they avoided potential humiliation.
