Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero insists Massimiliano Allegri was ‘excellent’ last season but will say more about the coach’s future he’ll be allowed to ‘decide one day.’
The former Italian striker analysed Juventus’ recent struggles during Sky Sport Italia’s post-match show on Sunday night.
Juventus have only earned two points in the last four Serie A games so coach Allegri is facing criticism from some Bianconeri supporters.
Juventus are not planning to sack him now, but his future at the Allianz Stadium remains uncertain despite a contract expiring in June 2025.
“Last year, Allegri wasn’t just good; he was excellent. He was heroic in creating an environment that helped Juventus qualify for the Champions League despite all that happened,” Del Piero said, as quoted by Ilbianconero.com.
“He has some merits this season too, like launching Kenan Yildiz and other young players. Of course, the situation isn’t ideal now, so Allegri has his responsibilities, like everyone else, staff members and footballers.
“There are situations that evolve with time. When you play for Juventus, you must improve. You can’t be on the same level as when you arrived.”
However, when asked if Allegri would stay or leave at the end of the season, Del Piero replied cryptically: “If one day I’ll be allowed to decide, I could tell you something; for now, I can’t say if he will stay or leave,” he said.
Del Piero has the highest number of appearances and goals for Juventus. He netted 290 goals in 705 appearances with the Bianconeri remaining at the club from 1993 until 2012.
