Deki, Matt on Motherwell, form, fitness and the mid-season break... | OneFootball

Dejan Kulusevski pulled the strings in our 4-0 friendly win against Motherwell at Hotspur Way, while Matt Doherty weighed in with two goals.

Deki scored the first and provided the assists for our third goal - tucked away by Bryan Gil - and fourth - a corner headed home by Matt, who earlier ended a fine team move with a quick switch onto his right foot and finish.

Here’s what they had to say to SPURSPLAY afterwards…

On the game…

Matt: “It was nice to get the shirt back on and get back our there. We played well, took the game seriously, pressed how we wanted to press, didn’t give them any real chance to start the game well, and we were on top from the start, so it was quite enjoyable - and I managed to be in the right place twice!”

Deki: “I feel very good. It’s been two hard weeks, a lot of hard training, so this game was a little hard, but also fun, because like Matt said, we did it the right way. We pressed well, played well with the ball and did some new stuff that I liked as well. We keep working and we’ll have some good weeks ahead.”

On the mid-season break...

Matt: "It hasn’t happened before, but we were only off for two weeks, so it’s not like we lost a lot of fitness or sharpness. We’re training hard again, as if it’s a new pre-season to try to improve and taking everything as we did in pre-season. We’ll do whatever they (coaching staff) tell us to do, we’ll work hard, try to get better because we know we’ve a game in two weeks (Boxing Day) against Brentford that we have to be ready for. We took the two weeks off, took our rest and now we’re back and taking training very seriously.”

On playing Motherwell as the World Cup quarter-finals take place...

Deki: “I thought that while I was playing! But that’s life, you have to adapt, we’re not at the World Cup, we’re here, we can improve and that’s what we want to do. Now we’ll shower and watch the games. We’ll enjoy that on TV, and best of luck to Ivan and Richy.”

Matt on Deki...

Matt: “He’s vitally important. You see what he brings to the table when he plays, how he impacts the team, always involved going forward whether he’s scoring or creating… personally, I love playing with him. He understands players’ games around him, understands my game, that I like to combine and link, so when I give him the ball, he knows that he can lay it off, one-touch, so we link well together. He’s a pleasure to play with and it’s we’re glad to have him back.”

Deki: “I’m going to go and cry now...”
