Danny Mills has claimed Jermain Defoe could take a 50 per cent pay cut on his £30,000-a-week wages to stay at Rangers next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Premier League defender suggested a new deal could be heavily incentivised with an appearance fee and goal bonus.

Football Insider revealed back in February that Defoe would have to take a big pay-cut to stay at Ibrox next season.

Steven Gerrard told Sky Sports earlier this week the club had opened talks with the veteran forward.

“I think he’s going to have to reduce his wages if he wants to stay in football if I’m honest,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Even if someone was to take him on a free, are a top Premier League side going to take him? Can you expect him to play week in, week out? I know he looks after himself very, very well but probably not.

“It’s a buyer’s market at the moment, especially for players of that ilk.

“Does he want to drop to the top end of the Championship? Does he want to drop into the bottom end of the Premier League where he’s not going to get too much of the ball?

“Or, does he want to stay at Rangers where he’s going to enjoy himself and maybe play in the Champions League? One little more hurrah.

“You suddenly think, he doesn’t need the money so much. If he halves his wages with big appearance money or goal bonus. He may go ‘You know what, for the sake of a year, I’m quite happy to stay.’ There’s a deal to be done.

“At his age, one last chance at the Champions League is better than going to the wrong end of the Premier League or the top end of the Championship.”
