Rangers striker Jermain Defoe could be a “massive signing” for a Championship club this summer, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the 38-year-old could still score goals regularly in England’s second tier.
As revealed by Football Insider this week, Defoe is likely to leave Rangers when his contract expires this summer.
The veteran hitman has struggled for regular game time at Ibrox, with just 12 appearances under his belt this season.
He initially joined on loan from Bournemouth in January 2019 and turned the move permanent last summer.
Whelan insisted Defoe needed to be playing week in, week out and suggested he would be a no-risk signing for an English side.
“I still believe that he can do at Championship level,” Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“If he’s playing up there with Rangers, which I think is probably around the Championship level, if you take away Celtic and Rangers, I think he could definitely do it.
“I think what Jermain Defoe needs is a team where he’s going to play regularly so his body can be at full peak of fitness.
“He needs to play. When you get to that age you’ve got to play week in, week out to keep that sharpness and that kind of appetite for the game.
“You never lose that knowing how to score goals. If you put the ball in the right areas, he will put it in the back of the net.
“He will be a massive signing for somebody. It’s not even a risk.”
