It has been no secret that Rangers are long term admirers of Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

The Gers were interested in the Scotsman in the summer, and the 26-year-old’s effortless step up to the Championship this season will only be growing his list of options with his contract on Wearside expiring at the end of next season.

Rangers are unlikely to force their way into contention for the Scottish Premiership title this season, but Mick Beale will be desperate to ensure that changes moving forward, and investment in future transfer windows may be viewed as a shortcut to achieving that.

Former Sunderland defender Wes Brown had his say on a potential future move to Ibrox for Stewart, quotes are provided by CasinosEnLigne.

He said: “Rangers would be a step up from Sunderland (if Ross were to go there).

“They’re in the Champions League.

“I think he could have an opportunity somewhere else in the summer – he’s definitely got the ability and drive for it.”

Rangers did not make a good fist of their Champions League campaign this season, and the embarrassment of it may have contributed to the sacking of Giovanni Van Bronckhorst.

With the Black Cats continuing to encourage supporters that a play-off finish is possible this season, they are very unlikely to cash in on a player as crucial as Stewart is.

What year was Sunderland founded?

1879 1889 1899 1909

The sale of Charlie Wyke to Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2021 has turned out to be an absolute master-stroke for Sunderland.

Stewart was merely a backup striker in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, and some supporters may have even had doubts about his ability to spearhead their forward line in League One.

Not many could have predicted what has followed and Stewart is easily in the most dangerous handful of number nines in the second tier.

As Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers have demonstrated with their career paths in the not too distant past, the lure of Premier League football is greater than that of Rangers or Celtic, and even though Stewart is from Scotland, it seems unlikely that he would jump ship to Ibrox while the Black Cats have a realistic chance of returning to the top-flight.
