Player News: Tottenham Hotspur skipper Hugo Lloris signs two year contract extension

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has signed a new two-year contract with the club that will keep him at the N17 until 2024, ending months of speculation regarding his future.

The Frenchman has been an ever-present figure in the Spurs backline since they signed him from Olympique Lyonnais in 2012. He has since developed into one of the finest shot-stoppers in world football and is amongst the finest players to represent us in the Premier League era.

With his current deal at the North London club set to expire in the summer, the France goalkeeper’s future had been under massive scrutiny in recent weeks. Lloris was linked with a return to France at the end of the campaign, with Spurs eyeing a new No. 1 ahead of next season.

Spurs captain Hugo Lloris hands Tottenham a huge boost by signing a new contract.

New head coach Antonio Conte has repeatedly expressed an interest to hold onto Lloris beyond the summer, and this news will certainly come as a boost to the Italian. The manager has been keen to add reinforcements to his Tottenham squad and will be glad that he does not need to broaden his search for a new shot-stopper.

Lloris has spent nearly a decade at the club and has consistently produced excellent results under all the managers he has worked with. As the skipper, he has led the team by example, and fans can expect the Frenchman to hold onto the same standards for a couple of years more.

The arrival of Conte has played a key role in convincing the 35-year-old to re-commit to the club. While it is clear that age is catching up with him, Lloris has shown this season that he can be relied upon as a starting calibre goalkeeper.

The arrival of Conte has played a key role in convincing the 35-year-old to re-commit to the club.

As the last line of defence, Spurs need a reliable goalkeeper in between the sticks if they are to go all the way under Conte. Spurs brought Pierluigi Gollini on loan last summer, but the Italian has shown himself incapable of trumping Lloris for the starting goalkeeper’s spot.

Conte’s arrival seems to not only send waves across the league to our rivals but has also made an impact amongst the players in our squad. The former Inter Milan manager is a serial winner and almost guarantees trophies, which seems to have convinced Lloris to stay for the next couple of years to try and win some silverware with the Italian in charge.

Despite winning it all with his national side, Lloris has found trophies hard to come by with the Lilywhites. All he has to show for his efforts at Spurs is an appearance in the 2019 Champions League final and a couple of League Cup finals in recent years

With him now set to spend two more years at the Lane, Lloris has the opportunity to play a major role in Conte’s renaissance. Hopefully, the squad can band together and ensure that the French legend will end his stint at the club with a trophy to his name.
