Willy Kambwala has given opportunities by Erik ten Hag last season when the Manchester United defence was depleted by injuries.

The young centre-back joined United’s academy in 2020, moving from Sochaux in France, and it looked like he found a route into the first team.

Kambwala played over 300 minutes across eight Premier League matches and picking up more in the FA Cup.

It came as a surprise to see United sell Kambwala in the summer, but we are fully aware that some of these decisions were made to give us a better FFP reading.

There was a feeling Kambwala could become a squad option for Ten Hag, but hejoined Villarreal to get regular football.

He played all 90 minutes against Sevilla in August, but hasn’t been able to play since.

According to El Periodico Mediterraneo, Kambwala’s ‘knee problems relapsed’, and the club have been careful with his recovery since the Sevilla meeting.

The youngster has returned to training and could be available for selection in the near future. Then he will be able to try put his injury issues behind him.

The French defender would have fallen further down the pecking order had he remained at the club.

Especially after the additions of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, although we have yet to see the latter in action due to a foot injury.

Kambwala wouldn’t be starting games ahead of Jonny Evans and Northern Ireland is proven to be our best back-up centre-back this season. Harry Maguire has been ruled out of action for the coming weeks.
