Defender who could be one of England’s “greatest” under pressure from Liverpool interest

It looks like this is a story which will never die…

Levi Colwill was strongly linked to Liverpool a couple of years ago when he had impressed on loan at Brighton while Chelsea had a horror season. The logic was that he might rather play for a title competing Reds team rather than return to the clown show at Stamford Bridge.

Fortunately the club put their foot down, Levi signed a contract and we’ve had two good years out of him since.

But the rumours just won’t go away, and it seems the Reds are still keeping the 22 year old on their shortlist.

Today CaughtOffside report that Liverpool have been “closely monitoring” Colwill and have “made enquiries” about his availability with Chelsea and the man himself.

The good news for Blues fans is that Colwill “is not currently seeking a move away from Chelsea.” Of course the club rate him highly, he’s a homegrown star who they see “as a future captain.” Under Enzo Maresca this season he’s played every Premier League game possible when available, and completing 90 minutes in each.

In a back line which has been in flux all year, he’s been the constant. His performances haven’t always been the best, but that’s in large part down to a dysfunctional team in general, and it’s clear he’s got more than enough talent to be a really world class star – hence the Liverpool interest.

Mauricio Pochettino had high praise for him shortly after arriving two years ago, saying that Colwill can be “one of the greatest centre backs in England.”

He’s on duty with the Three Lions now, and we hope he gets some minutes for them under new boss Thomas Tuchel.
