In a detailed interview with La Vanguardia, Barcelona sporting director Deco has offered clarity on the club’s pursuit of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, one of the most talked-about targets of the summer.

With a release clause of €62 million, Barcelona are seriously evaluating the move, especially after Luis Díaz was dropped down the list of priorities.

Deco openly admitted that strengthening the wing position is essential for Barça this summer. “As wingers, we only have Lamine and Raphinha,” he explained.

“Ferran Torres is now more of a striker. When we’re missing Lamine or Raphinha, the team’s level drops. So, we’re looking at options based on quality and cost.”

Naturally, Nico Williams fits that bill perfectly. At just 22, he is explosive, creative, and already proven in La Liga. Deco confirmed the club’s interest but remained cautious.

“There’s a clear criterion that any player coming to Barça must believe in the project. Nico didn’t come last season, as Dani Olmo was a bigger priority. But now, Nico and others are showing more desire to join.”

No favouritism

While the move is not yet done, Deco confirmed that Barcelona have already spoken to Nico’s agent to understand the player’s intentions.

“In the end, you follow a process. Speak to the agent, look at the contract, and then see if the club wants the release clause paid or is open to talks. In Nico’s case, the clause is clear,” Deco stated.

He also addressed dressing room dynamics, saying the club is cautious about maintaining harmony.

“We have a good group, and we want to keep it that way. Players like Nico or Luis Diaz have the right mindset. They’re hungry to succeed, and that matters.”

However, Deco made it clear that Nico’s friendship with Lamine Yamal won’t influence the decision.

“Yes, they are friends, but this is not a club of friends. This is a place for work and winning. If he joins, great, they will get along. But he has to match the club’s values and expectations first.”

Finally, Deco confirmed that if Barcelona do sign a top winger this summer, that will be the last big signing. “If we close a winger, no more high-level players will arrive,” he concluded.
